I created Spike during my Philadelphia years, back when
ninjas in comics were all the rave. Ninja this, ninja that... those were
some dark times. Spike was intended to be a blue-collar, two-fisted hero
that wasn't impressed with fancy ninja powers or flashy fighting styles,
sort of like a canine Clint Eastwood. The films I made about him didn't
reflect that, sadly. The short comic I included here
was done in the early 90's for my buddy Steve Rittler's comic Morrigan.
While Steve's stuff looked great, I wasn't too thrilled with how the Spike
pages turned out. My inking was terrible, the drawings shoddy, and the
toning atrocious, but it was cool to see something of mine in print at last.
I scanned the pages in and removed the awful toning, then
laid down some color. I was also tempted to touch up the inking, but I
left it alone so that when I gaze at it, I can remember how bad it was. |
